What Do Home Care Providers Do?

If you're considering a job as a home care provider, it's important you are aware of what this type of job entails. It's not an easy job, it requires specialist care and treatment for the elderly, those recovering from surgery and those that are unable to care for themselves.


These positions are available as part-time, full-time and even live-in, depending on the patient's requirements. In most cases these jobs must a full day. Sometimes you asked to spend the evening with the patient so the family can go out, though this is something that agreed on in the interview.

As a home care provider, you are responsible for the daily care of the patient. This is helping them get out of bed, bathing and dressing them. Each patient has different requirements, therefore it will depend on the job you are applying for about how much you need to do for the patient.

You will be responsible for transferring the patient safely from their bed to their wheelchair, such as or helping them get in the bath. In many cases you are responsible for ensuring their bedding is clean and their bedroom is in order. This may include tidying their drawers, managing their wardrobe and some general housekeeping.


As a home care provider, you're required to put a care plan in place to make sure you manage your patient effectively. This may include ensuring they take their medication on time and take their vitals as and when needed.

Often you will be responsible for helping them with their daily shopping requirements, whether this is buying their groceries or helping them buy new clothes. Many home care providers take their patients with them to the shop wherever possible, giving them a chance to get out of the house and choose their own groceries for the week.

Companionship is another important role that you will be responsible for throughout the day. While you are there to care for their needs throughout the day, it's nice to sit down every now and again and get to know your patient. In some cases these patients are bound or house bound and you are the only person they see, outside their own family. Whether you sit and watch some television together or you read to them, they will appreciate the companionship.


Home care providers are also responsible for the patient's stimulation. This means taking your patient out for the day, whether it's a stroll through the local area, a trip to the zoo or to the cinema, it's a chance to take your patient out of the home and enable them to interact with other people. Many of the elderly patients are members of retirement groups in the area, maybe they get together once a week to play bingo. It's your responsibility to go with your patient to these events.

Housekeeping is one of the roles expected to complete as a home care provider. Because you are responsible for the overall wellness of your patient required to cook, clean, wash dishes, do laundry and ironing. The overall idea is that the patient enjoys a clean and healthy home with the added medical support should they need it.
